5 Lessons from the Temptation of Jesus – Matthew 4:1-11

Object lesson: Give a small piece of candy to everyone to hold in their hand, but cannot eat. After a while talk about how the kids are tempted to eat it.

Discussion Questions:

  • What is temptation? What have you been tempted to do?

  • Who led Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted? *God doesn’t tempt anyone, but he allows our faith to be tested.

  • What was the first temptation the Devil tried with Jesus?

  • How did Jesus respond?

  • What was the second temptation the Devil tried with Jesus? What trick did Satan use against Jesus here?

  • How did Jesus reply?

  • What was the third temptation the Devil tried on Jesus?

  • How did Jesus respond?

 Application: What can we learn?

  1. We will be tempted.
  2. Temptation is not sin, but giving in to temptation is.
  3. Satan will use every advantage he has, including misusing the Bible.
  4. Like Jesus, the Word of God is the most powerful response to temptation.
  5. Jesus was the only one who was sinless. We have sinned and will sin, and need his sinless life to save us.
